This comprehensive course on Grid Integration and Compliance Studies is designed to provide engineers and power system professionals with a deep technical understanding of how renewable energy sources are integrated into modern electrical grids. The curriculum begins with an overview of recent trends in renewables, specifically focusing on Solar PV, Wind, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), while addressing the evolving challenges and future requirements mandated by different utility providers for grid connection.
A significant portion of the program is dedicated to the modeling and analysis of power system networks. Students will learn to model essential renewable components and evaluate the impact of electrical parameters such as resistance, inductance, and capacitance on system performance. The course emphasizes the integration of these sources into a base case network to perform steady-state and dynamic analysis, ensuring that participants can observe and interpret system behavior under various operating conditions and conduct essential model quality tests.
The syllabus further explores specialized studies critical for utility approval, including short-circuit analysis and protection settings for inverters. Participants will master grid connection requirements common to all utilities, such as validating reactive power (Q) requirements, sizing capacitor banks, and simulating FACTS devices like SVC and STATCOM to maintain grid stability. Additionally, the course covers plant-level voltage and frequency responses, alongside power quality studies involving harmonic analysis and filter design to ensure full compliance with regulatory standards.
To bridge the gap between theory and high-level industrial application, the course includes training in electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis, focusing on the impact of switching studies within renewable plants. The learning experience concludes with detailed case studies of 30 MW real-time projects. These practical scenarios cover standalone PV, Wind, and BESS plants, as well as complex hybrid configurations such as PV + Wind + BESS, utilizing industry-standard software tools like PSSE, PSCAD, and ETAP to prepare students for professional-grade power evacuation and integration projects.
