Comprehensive Power System Simulation and Transient Studies using PSCAD
Bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice. Master EMT simulation, model complex power systems, and conduct advanced transient analysis in PSCAD.
Workshop Expectations
By the end of this workshop, you are expected to:
- Understand the fundamentals of EMT simulation and PSCAD.
- Develop practical power system models in PSCAD.
- Model and validate sources, loads, transformers, transmission lines, cables, breakers, and reactive equipment.
- Perform fault and switching studies.
- Interpret PSCAD simulation results and validate the developed models.
Prerequisites
Basic understanding of electrical engineering and power system fundamentals is recommended. Prior PSCAD experience is not mandatory, as the workshop starts with fundamentals and progressively moves towards advanced EMT studies.
Masterclass Curriculum
Fundamentals of EMT Simulation and PSCAD Interface
Learn the basics of Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulation and get familiar with the PSCAD environment. Topics include EMT vs other studies, PSCAD workspace, case/project creation, libraries, simulation settings (time step, duration, plot step), and result viewing.
Modelling in PSCAD
Develop practical skills to model power system components in PSCAD including sources, loads, transmission lines, cables, transformers, breakers, shunt reactors, capacitors, surge arresters, and measurement tools. Also covers network building, subsystem creation, and result validation techniques.
Temporary Overvoltage (TOV) Studies
Understand the causes and impact of TOV in power systems. Topics include Ferranti effect, load rejection, fault-induced TOV, surge arrester response, and mitigation techniques. Practical case studies will help in analyzing and reducing TOV in real-world scenarios.
Transformer Energization Studies
Learn to simulate transformer energization and analyze inrush current, overvoltages, remnant flux (remanence) effects, and associated transients. The module covers single-phase and three-phase energization cases and methods to limit inrush and transient effects.
Who Can Join the Workshop?
The workshop is suitable for:
- Power system engineers
- Electrical engineers
- Protection and substation engineers
- Renewable energy and grid-integration engineers
- Engineers working with high-voltage systems
- Power system consultants and study engineers
- Graduate students and engineering professionals interested in PSCAD and EMT studies
